Weekend Adventures With Oliver Charles

Introducing a 5-part blog series about using the weekend as an opportunity to explore.

Discover what you should keep in your bag for impulsive adventuring, simple, healthy recipes you can meal prep, and day trips on the California coast.

----------

I crave adventure and want to get out as much as I can.

Thankfully, within any 2-hour radius of a California city, there’s something to see and explore.

Laguna Beach is one of the best getaway places to put distance between the hustle and bustle of work in the city.

I love that this serene place is so close to LA, but feels far away. Sundays are inarguably the best day to go, especially in the early morning when you can catch the sunrise and avoid the crowds pouring through.

Come with me through the coastal fog to bask in Sunday glory.

Laguna Beach is what the people call “bohemian chic”.

Pretty much everyone is dressed for yoga on the beach at any given moment. It’s comfy and canny.

Oliver Charles plays with this idea - comfortable clothing that meets all needs. It’s an effortless, shapeshifting beauty.

I obviously kept it very classy and repeat an outfit I cling to when I go out. My 5+-year-old jean shorts, Blundstones, and my OC sweater.

Why ruin a good thing? I’m not much of an ironing person, but I do want to look crisp and clean.

My yak wool sweater keeps my messy demeanor at bay.

I’m a sunrise lover. I will seek them anywhere and everywhere I go.

5 am wake up? No problem! The first time I went to Top of the World Laguna, I was in awe of how much it actually looked like I was on top of the world.

I hovered above the clouds, the ocean out of sight, and the hills shallowly peeking through. It reminded me of the Lake of Clouds hike in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

You can park at Alta Laguna Park, but make sure to get there early because it can get busy. The entrance to the trails is past the playground.

There will be a trail map posted so you can decide which one you’d like to get on, or use AllTrails to navigate.

Breakfast at a little sliver of Paris in SoCal, Moulin is right in the heart of Laguna.

If I could have a croissant every day for the rest of my life, I would. But not just any croissant.

Those flaky, delectable layers need to be perfectly and tactfully created. And massive amounts of butter need to be involved.

You’ll know you have a good croissant as soon as you set eyes on it. Caramel crisp skin with melty internal layers. Moulin does it just right.

If you’re unfortunately not a croissant fan, they also have a lovely selection of pastries and breakfast options. Order the croissandwich.

Outfit Repeater with No shame

Recognize my outfit? That’s because I’ve worn it before! No shame here - I like that it blends with all that I do.

A sweater is not just reserved for the trail or long drives. It can be fancy too! And what’s a Sunday without a little shopping and lazily roaming the streets?

There are plenty of boutiques on and around Forest Ave to stop in. Check out Laguna Art Supply too and make some art on the beach!

There’s a shop on the main street that has a “living wall” with succulents. Others have vines growing all over.

And if you have the time and are interested, spend some time wandering the side streets. I love Laguna for its architecture.

It reminds me so much of the buildings in Chamonix, France- white walls, brown shingles, and flowers everywhere.

Spend some time on the beach right in the center of town.

You can play volleyball, swim, tan, or simply take a walk. Sometimes I’ll sit on the rocks are just look out on the ocean.

Admire the murals by the sea, scattered seaweed, and sea life. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, folks!

Hungry? KITC is a brunch spot outside the main center of Laguna.

Tucked away, enjoy a peaceful, passionately made meal. This place won’t break your budget but will make you feel like a king in Laguna.

Order a classic American breakfast or satiate your sweet tooth with a brioche french toast.

Right next to Kitchen in the Canyon is a dazzling art gallery, Art A Fair.

Check their website to see their current offerings. There’s live music, workshops, and special events!

If you’re looking for a unique souvenir, wander to their gift shop. If you want to stay in the main part of Laguna, check out the Laguna Art Museum off the PCH. I love a traditional walk through an art museum.

Personal Uniform For All Adventures

Swim, surf, and relax at Crystal Cove State Park.

This park covers many areas off the PCH making it a wonderful evening drive.

It’s a sweet way to end the evening, cozied up in a wool sweater and blanket.

If you’re not too interested in the water, take a hike or set up camp! My favorite area here is Moro Beach.

You’ll walk through a small tunnel to get to the beach area from the parking lot.

Laguna Beach has everything outdoor folks need; mountains for hiking, biking, and running, an ocean for surfing, paddleboarding, and swimming.

It’s a no-brainer that this is the place to spend a not-so-lazy Sunday, indulge in the yummiest food, and be present with your movement.

I’m happy I can tack this to the list of places I wear my everyday sweater.

It negates the need for all the clothes in my closet. A smaller suitcase equals lighter travel and saved money!
