Weekend Adventures With Oliver Charles

Introducing a 5-part blog series about using the weekend as an opportunity to explore.

Discover what you should keep in your bag for impulsive adventuring, simple, healthy recipes you can meal prep, and day trips on the California coast.

----------

My work week has been crazy lately. With everything going on, I have to really try to find time to reset.

That's why whenever I have the chance to escape for the weekend and adventure, I always go for it.

I feel that It’s more than necessary to create a balance between work and play.

Other than their mascot (the yak!), I love the Oliver Charles sweater because it’s effortless and all about simplifying life.

When I need a break and my mind is tired from constant focus, I don’t have to worry about the way I look. It’s done for me.

I love outfit repeating, and feeling comfortable and free. I’ve gotten into the habit of taking my sweater everywhere with me.

Sure I cozy up in it while I’m working on my laptop, but it’s my go-to for weekend adventures too.

Since it’s all people talk about sometimes, I figured I’d take the opportunity to see what San Diego is all about.

Within a two and a half hour drive from Los Angeles, San Diego is a hot spot destination for travelers all over the world.

It’s one of California’s major cities, which embodies a famously laid-back vibe.

I Always Pack My Thin, Wool Sweater

Also, the weather is relentlessly gorgeous, and everyone wants to be out on the beach, peering at the jagged cliffs that fall into the sea.

Even though San Diego is a sunny city, I still packed my sweater for evenings.

Let me tell you, California gets cold! I mean, maybe to a Northerner, 50/60 degree weather isn’t so bad, but for us residents, it’s pretty chilly!

Because Southern California is a desert, the temperatures aren’t consistent between day and night.

Temperatures will drop significantly in the evenings. A thin, wool sweater is exactly what you’ll need to get you through your time there.

Oliver Charles sweater designs are also well-thought through. They have special ventilation in the arms to keep you cool, even in the sun.

Where You Should Visit In San Diego

San Diego has endless breweries, restaurants, attractions, and peaceful parks.

I cruised the downtown streets, munched on seafood by the pier, and spent the evening winding down in Balboa Park.

The relaxed attitude, maverick souls, and creativity are contagious. With such a romantic essence, I can see why people would want to settle down here.

If you only have one day to fall in love with San Diego, let me show you where you should go.

  • Gaslamp Quarter: If you like exciting nightlife, go to the Gas Lamp Quarter.
  • Barrio Logan: If you like a more laid-back, historic, artsy vibe, go to Barrio Logan.
  • East County: If you’re a nature lover and want to bring your family along, go to East County.
  • La Jolla: If you’re here for the Cali beach vibes and beauty, La Jolla is for you.
  • Little Italy: If you want cozy restaurants that are elegant and romantic, head to Little Italy.

Only Have a Day To Explore San Diego?

Start your morning at a top-notch coffee shop. Leave early from your home base to have a full day. Communal Coffee is in San Diego’s North Park.

This coffee shop is out of a snug trailer, which makes it entirely fun to visit and photograph!

They have peaceful outdoor seating, top-notch espresso, and are attached to a retail shop and a florist.

If you feel like walking, cruise down the street to explore a few of the other neat shops!

Cruise into the afternoon by riding bikes around Coronado Island. Once you finish your coffee, get ready for some movement in the sun.

You can take the ferry or drive to Coronado Island, which is attached to mainland SD by the Coronado Bridge.

There are cute little shops to explore, as well as a trail that goes around the entire island. You can rent bikes there, and hit the beach at any point during your ride!

Grab lunch at Mitch’s Seafood, then pick up dessert from Extraordinary Desserts.

Since you’ll probably be hungry after all that movement, have lunch at Mitch’s Seafood in Point Loma.

It’s a small, local, and homey seafood joint that looks out on the pier. There’s seating outside and indoors, and you’ll have the choice of eating what’s local and fresh caught.

And, as always, beware of the seagulls!

Head over to Fourth Street to get dessert at Extraordinary Desserts.

Extraordinary Desserts was created by pastry chef, Karen Krasne, and is beloved by all who enter.

You can surely taste it with each sultry bite. And it’s also within walking distance from Balboa Park.

Hold your cravings though, save your desserts to eat at the park later!

Visit and hang out in Balboa Park. You’ve probably heard of Balboa Park, the 1,200 acre icon that’s bigger than Central Park.

While you could spend your time aimlessly wandering as you please, head to the heart of the park to marvel at historic buildings, stop at a museum, or eat a churro!

There’s a huge water fountain and a over one-hundred-year-old Moreton Bay Fig Tree to pay your respects to.

You could get lost here exploring, marveling at the nature within the city, and peering at the strikingly blue sky.

Complete your visit to San Diego by letting a California sunset gently carry you into the night.

Sunset Cliffs, as you can probably tell by its name, is the premier spot to watch a sunset in San Diego.

Or if you favor land over water, go to Kate Sessions Park (which allows dogs) to lay on the grass and watch the sky turn pink.
