A Guide To The All-Season Sweater And Sustainable Style

This is the 3rd blog in a 3-part series on a simple idea: a sustainable life begins with high-quality knitwear that actually lasts.

It can be hard to find clothing that checks all the boxes:

✔ Doesn’t show too much wear.
✔ Versatile in your closet.
✔ Makes you feel good wearing it.
✔ Made from natural materials.

In this blog, I’ll explore everything you need to know about the benefits of outfit repeating.

----------

Recently, I’ve been trying to be more conscious about what clothing I buy, preferring to buy quality clothing that costs more over fast fashion, “trendy” pieces. This allows me to repeat outfits or pieces and never run out of things to wear.

Classic styles will never go out of fashion and can be styled to keep up with current trends. Over time, I’ll have a closet full of things I love and a capsule wardrobe that I’ve built on sustainable fashion principles.

Building a capsule wardrobe can be daunting. I’m still working on mine, slowly acquiring quality pieces one by one as I come across things I love and can’t live without.

What’s great about a capsule wardrobe is that starting with a strong base makes building outfits easy all year round.

No more stress about what to wear, not liking how things fit, or having pieces that don’t go with anything else in your closet. That’s the beauty of the capsule wardrobe.

Repeating Key Pieces

A capsule wardrobe is centered around repeating key pieces, which can be easy if you purchase quality items that fit well.

Once your base outfit is created, you can spice it up with accessories and layers.

Neutral colors that complement most other colors will make this entire process much easier.

My All-Season Boat Neck is perfect for this. I love the fit, it’s made with high-quality material (yak wool), and it’s a nice, neutral color.

I’ve often found that classic styles never truly go out of style, or do, but they return in a few years.

If this is the case, then updating your capsule pieces with accessories to fit the current trends can be an easy solution to going out and buying a whole new wardrobe.

Oftentimes, purchasing statement pieces or simply changing the way you wear something can be all you need to update it to current trends.

Another critical factor is ensuring the fit is both comfortable and classic. Trendy cut-outs and shapes will be harder to pair with other pieces, and you’ll most likely get tired of them over time. Classic never goes out of style!

A Sweater For All Seasons

The term “All-Season Sweater” was new to me...

Every spring, as the weather warms, my sweaters get shoved in a box and put under the bed with all my other winter clothes until the time comes again to bring them back out.

But this year, one sweater will stay out, my All-Season Boat Neck.

Could I wear it comfortably in the summer? Would I use it? Would it complement my current wardrobe?

After starting this series and building outfits based around my sweater, my tone has changed, and I’m pleasantly surprised to say that it has become a staple in my closet, even in the warmer months.

Sweaters made from materials like yak wool are incredibly versatile. Layering them underneath can create extra warmth for Chicago's cold winters, and throwing a sweater over a tank top on a cool summer night in the city is perfect for keeping warm without being too warm.

How To Curb Self-Consciousness About Repeating

The final and possibly most daunting feeling in sustainable style is that it can be hard to ignore the nagging feeling that someone might notice you’re wearing the same thing over and over again.

However, keep in mind that the environment and your wallet will thank you later.

A true style expert knows that clothes are meant to be worn repeatedly, not once and then forgotten.

The time and effort it takes to make a quality piece of clothing is something that used to be valued and felt worth paying for. Clothing is an expression of who we are, inside and out, so why don’t we put more thought into how it’s being made and where it’s coming from?

Next time you pull out the credit card to buy a big “haul” online, I encourage you to think twice about each item you’re buying and if your money would be better spent more sustainably.
