It's January 5th, 2021 2022

Dear readers,

Happy first Wednesday of 2022! I haven't penned a New Yak Times since last year...

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. The "since last year" joke is one of my favorites.

Why? Because of the emotional rollercoaster the joke ignites in my colleagues after I say, "Hey, I haven't seen you since last year," the second they sluggishly wander into the office after a blissful week of doing nothing but eating and drinking.

First, you get confusion. Then there's a slight hint of happiness. Followed by a wave of disappointment. And finally, anger, so much anger.

Unfortunately, Oliver Charles doesn't have an office, so the year is off to a less than stellar start. Alas, I refuse to let it get me down.

More on starting the year strong in my update.

This week's top stories include:

RIP Betty White

Talking Points:

  • Betty White, a true American treasure, passed away at the age of 99 on Friday, just 11 days before her 100th birthday.
  • Arguably one of the most recognizable actors in the world, her fame spanned generations. Betty White was responsible for the most memorable characters in sitcom history and an icon amongst younger generations. She triumphantly hosted SNL at the age of 88.
  • Betty White holds the Guinness World Record for being the longest-ever female entertainer. She won 5 Emmys, a Daytime Emmy, and a Lifetime Achievement Award during her seven-decade career. Most of all, she'll be remembered for her love for animals.

CDC Changes The Rules

Talking Points:

  • Shortly after Christmas, the CDC came out with new COVID guidelines, just as cases reached their highest point in the pandemic.
  • The CDC announced that the isolation period could be shortened to 5 days from 10 after a positive COVID test. This is in response to massive staffing shortages as more and more people get sick.
  • The science behind the shortening of the guidelines points to a different type of illness caused by the Omnicron variant. This version of the virus seems to be faster-moving, making people less sick. With that in mind, the CDC says it's safer to shorten the isolation period.

Ghislaine Maxwell Is Guilty

Talking Points:

  • It seems as though the sickening saga of Jeffrey Epstein is coming to an end. Last Wednesday, British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted of five federal sex trafficking charges. She faces up to 65 years in prison.
  • While the conviction is undoubtedly a win for the victims, many questions remain unanswered, leaving a dark shadow over the Epstein saga that seems like a conspiracy.
  • The victims of the Epstein/Maxwell sex trafficking ring say that this is just the beginning. Victims and those close to the case claim other influential people from princes to presidents were deeply involved, and they intend to bring them to justice too.

Elizabeth Holmes Is Also Guilty

Talking Points:

  • Nineteen years ago, a young, ambitious Stanford student named Elizabeth Holmes started a revolutionary new biotech company called Theranos. On Monday, that same student was indicted on 4 counts of fraud.
  • Holmes was convicted on 4 of the 11 charges. She was guilty of 3 counts of wire fraud and 1 count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. She was acquitted of all 4 counts related to defrauding patients.
  • I'd assume we're fairly familiar with the story, but now that it's coming to an end, what happens next? Will the conviction deter people from lying and self-promoting? Unfortunately, it probably won't change much. The allure of money and fame is simply too strong.

Ringing In The New Year

Oliver Charles update

It's the first week of the year, filled with hope, motivation, and maybe a little dread.

I believe it's the most important week of the year. It's time to set the tone for the rest of the 358 days. If 2022 is going to be your year, then you have to start now.

Here are my 5 tips for setting yourself up for success in 2022.

1. This should be obvious, but get yourself a new sweater. They say dress for success, so dress like 2022 is your year.

2. Simplify your life. Get rid of everything except what's essential to staying alive (this includes your new sweater).

3. Move to the woods and start living off the land. You'll save $1,000s in rent and food costs.

4. Use those $1000s to buy Bitcoin**. Bitcoin is the future.

5. Sit back, relax and remember that no one has any idea what they are doing or talking about.

Until next time, keep building 💪.
