It's July 21st, 2021.

Dear readers,

It's another hot hump day. Chances are wherever you are, it's probably pretty hot outside. The effects of climate change are starting to show their teeth at an unprecedented pace. We believe deeply in being as sustainable as possible because you can't wear sweaters when it's 112 degrees out. More in my update below.

Let's get into it!

  • Jeff Bezos, the space cowboy
  • The Olympics start on Friday
  • The world is on fire
  • A new Jackass movie?

Jeff Bezos, The Space Cowboy

Talking Points:

  • On Tuesday morning, Jeff took off for an 11-minute ride to the edge of space. The trip went off without a hitch.
  • A few newsletters ago, I talked about Jeff Bezos auctioning off a seat on his rocket. Well, the final price ended up being $28M. Who was it? We'll never know because the anonymous buyer had a scheduling conflict. I would love to know what event took precedent over the rocket flight.
  • There were four members on this inaugural flight. Jeff Bezos, his brother Mark Bezos, 82-year-old aviation pioneer Wally Funk, and 18-year-old trust fund kid Oliver Daemen.
  • Funk and Daemen became the oldest and youngest people, respectively, ever to travel to space.
  • After the flight, Jeff thanked the customers and employees of Amazon for paying for the flight; A tone deaf statement that some members of Congress quickly commented on.

The Olympics Start on Friday

Talking Points:

  • The Opening Ceremony of the 32 Olympiad will take place on Friday, marking the start of the 2020 Summer Olympics.
  • The COVID delayed 2020 Olympics have already been incredibly controversial. On Tuesday morning, the CEO of the Games didn't rule out a last-minute cancelation.
  • The 2020 Summer Olympics will award medals across 339 events, representing 33 different sports. Six are new sports (baseball, softball, skateboarding, surfing, sport climbing, and karate).
  • It's a well-known secret that athletes during the Olympics games tend to have a lot of sex with each other. This is unsurprising given that the elite athletes are all in peak physical condition and living in a college dorm. To combat this, the Tokyo Olympic Committee has created cardboard beds meant to collapse if more than one person lays on them... ok, this was debunked, but could you imagine?
  • The Japanese government and companies have already spent more than $10B on the Olympics, including $3B on eight new venues for the Games.

First The Ocean Now Oregon...

Talking Points:

  • The "Bootleg Fire" in Oregon is so big that it's begun producing its own weather, including fire tornados.
  • The fire has scorched more than 606 square miles -- an area larger than Los Angeles and about half the size of Rhode Island.
  • The fire has averaged a rate of spread nearly 1,100 acres per hour for more than 13 consecutive days -- a rate that would burn through New York's Central Park in only 45 minutes.
  • The ever-present smoke from the fire is reaching as far as the east coast, acting as an ever-present reminder of the world's dire need to take climate change seriously by buying less and buying better.
  • The fire is the 3rd largest in the state's history but is expected to become the largest before it's contained. No deaths or injuries have been reported in relation to the fire, but more than 75 homes and other structures have burned.

Whatever Happened to Jackass?

Talking Points:

  • Jackass is back and the same as it's always been... other than the fact that the actors are now nearly 50. It should make for an exciting film.
  • The movie was scheduled to be released in March of 2021 but was delayed until July 2022 because of COVID.
  • The brand created by Johnny Knoxville, Spike Jonze, and Jeff Tremaine has released three movies to date, and the franchise has racked up more than $335M worldwide.
  • Jackass was a bit of an underrated cultural phenomenon. It was Youtube before Youtube. Millions of young millennials loved the dangerous, stupid, and vulgar stunts. Much of which was recreated and then posted to Youtube.
  • Judging by the trailer, the fourth movie seems to be right on brand, just with older versions of the same actors. Regardless of its quality, it'll exceptionally nostalgic.

Oliver Charles update

Not yet, but they could be soon. As the world heats up and droughts become ever-present, I must wonder if creating a sweater that'll last forever is a good idea. In 50 years, will we even need sweaters?

So why even bother? Well, cause every little bit counts, and we shouldn't have to wait until Earth Day to remind you of that.

Sustainability is the next gold rush, and we are the next Levis.

Until next time, keep building 💪.
