The Johnson & Johnson vaccine gets banned

Yesterday the CDC recommended pausing the use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine out of an abundance of caution. The announcement came after 6 people experienced blood clots. To date, more than 7,000,000 doses of J&J have been administered.

Talking points:

The likelihood of getting a blood clot after receiving a J&J vaccine is about .00088%. The likelihood of getting a blood clot after contracting COVID is about 16%.

According to the CDC, the pause is expected only to last for a couple of days.

The White House says it still expects there to be enough vaccine doses for "every single, solitary American" by the end of next month.

For now, you have a better chance of being attacked by a bear than you do of developing a blood clot from the J&J vaccine.

Amazon defeats the union

Peeing in bottles. Excessive surveillance. Back-breaking work. Jail or an Amazon warehouse?

Some workers were fed up with the working conditions at an Amazon facility in Bessemer Alabama and attempted to form a union. After months of campaigning, the union did not come to fruition, dealing a big blow to the worker's rights movement.

Talking points:

Amazon has more than 800 warehouses, employing more than 500,000 people.

Amazon currently pays warehouse workers $15/hr almost double the national minimum wage.

The vote in Bessemer was the largest union challenge in the company's history. Only 30% of workers voted to unionize at the Bessemer Facility.

Only 6.3% of private-sector workers belonged to unions in 2020 according to U.S. Labor Department statistics. Private sector union membership declined by 428,000 in 2020 from the year before.

DMX passed away at the age of 50

Earl Simmons, otherwise known as DMX, passed away on Friday after a heart attack on April 2nd put him into a coma. His raw, poetry-like lyrics and signature barking made him into a man larger than life. He will undoubtedly go down as one of the all-time greats.

Talking points:

Mr. Simmons was nominated for 3 Grammys during his storied career.

He was the first musician to have his first 5 albums reach #1 on the Billboards.

He took the name DMX from the Oberheim DMX drum machine, a model popular in the 1980s.

Patagonia announces it's banning corporate logos

The Patagonia vest has become the quintessential uniform for venture capitalists and those working on Wall St. rather than being synonymous with the outdoors, climate activism, and rock climbing, the company has become known as "Patagucci". They are determined to change that.

Talking points:

Nearly two years ago Patagonia announced it would no longer accept new clients for co-branding if their mission and values did not align with protecting the planet.

They have officially suspended the program and will no longer be selling any co-branded products.

The company pointed out that adding a logo to their products limited the use to an employee's tenure, leading to unused and unnecessarily discarded garments.
