I (Slater) went to college at Cal Poly on the central coast of California. Some people call it the Harvard of the West, but that's neither here nor there.

Big Sur was in our backyard, and every weekend that wasn't spent studying was spent exploring the incredible coastline of Big Sur.

My adventures didn't stop at the coastline; they extended deep into the cold, unforgiving great white shark-infested waters. We'd spend all day swimming and snorkeling through the seaweed forests there.

With a careful eye, we could find the perfect number of rocks on the beach to counteract the buoyancy of our wetsuits, allowing us to float just beneath the seaweed effortlessly. It's the closest I will ever get to visiting an alien planet.

The more time I spent underwater, allowing the waves to push and pull me from one location to another, the more I learned to appreciate the lack of control over the environment around me. 

In a way, my appreciation for that force of nature is a core philosophy behind Oliver Charles. So much of life is out of control, but one thing we can control is what we choose to wear.

Thus the things we choose to wear should be able to withstand the ever-present, uncontrollable waves of life.
