Why do most clothes fall apart?

There’s a thing called “planned obsolescence”, which is the amount of time producers plan for their products to last before they fall apart. Over the years, companies have spent a lot of money and effort to normalize low expectations for the quality of our clothes. F*ck that...

A fast fashion “deal” off the shelf may seem pretty sweet in the moment, although, if it’s cheaply made, it’ll need to be replaced, which is costly both to customers and the planet. On the other hand, buying higher quality clothes that will potentially last a lifetime, saves both on unnecessary replacement costs and emissions.

This is an issue where we can all make a difference.

Textile production creating more greenhouse gases than international flights and maritime shipping combined. Synthetic fabrics use nearly 342 million barrels of oil a year.

Just by wearing our clothes for 9 months longer (versus donating or replacing) , our individual carbon footprint can be reduced by 30%, which is equivalent to removing half a million cars off the road per person per year.

We make sweaters from super (sustainable) fibers.

We knit sweaters yak khullu ("coo-loo") and merino, two of the worlds more impressive natural wool fibers. Khullu is similar to cashmere but better for our planet (read more here: NPR).

25% of a garment's carbon footprint comes from its lifespan of care. Our materials fight bacteria before becoming odor. And when it comes time to throw these clothes into the washing machine, you can forget the detergent because khullu and merino are self-cleaning.

While your laundry machine might get lonely, you can feel great knowing you're reducing your carbon footprint with clothing that rarely needs to be washed.
