It's March 24th, 2021.

I desire all is well with thee. Particularly if you live in Utqiaġvik, Alaska, the northernmost city in the United States. You can expect a high of 7 and a low of -3. It'll be the warmest day of the week so get outside and enjoy it.

Last week's newsletter had a 46.6% open rate. The most loved meme was about buying a zoo.

The memes of the week include:

  • A Prince becomes a Chief
  • Banker burnout
  • The tax deadline is now May 15th
  • People are returning to the office
  • Biden's first presidential meme

The Duke of Sussex has joined Silicon Valley startup BetterUp

What happens when a prince is no longer a prince? They become a chief, naturally. In Harry's case, he's the Chief of Impact. A lofty title even for a former prince. While this is likely a bit of a marketing stunt and the "impact" Harry will have on BetterUp's business is likely to be minimal.

However, he does deserve some credit. There are tons of people that would kill for such a high-profile position, and Harry beat them all. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out. One thing's for sure, a lot more people know what BetterUp is today than yesterday.

Goldman Sachs is working their employees to death

It's fairly well known that Investment Bankers are required to work long hours. The upside of that is that they get paid remarkably well and have lots of future opportunities available to them. That's assuming they survive... Goldman Sachs (GS) has recently come under fire after an internal survey was leaked with some insane numbers about the working conditions. Here are the highlights:

Most hours worked in a week: 105

Average working hours: 98hrs/week (14hrs/day 7 days a week) since Jan 1, 2021.

Average amount sleep per night: 5hrs

Average bedtime: 3 am

One employee compared it to growing up in foster care, saying working at Goldman is actually worse.

The IRS needs extra time to calculate capital gain taxes

The IRS graciously extended the federal tax deadline from April 15th or May 17th, citing COVID as the reason for the move. However, most states still have an April 15th deadline, so it's fairly useless to the average American.

Nonetheless, the hoards of people that poured into meme stocks and cryptocurrencies, and in some cases made fortunes doing so, are going to see some very interesting tax bills this year...

People are headed back to the office. Well, sort of...

The WFH era is coming to some sort of end as companies begin to coax workers back to the office. However, many companies are going fully remote. According to Global Workplace Analytics, just 3.6% of the US workforce worked from home in 2018. Now, “...it's estimated that 25-30% of the workforce will be working-from-home multiple days a week by the end of 2021.”

What's not going to change is our willingness to blame advanced technology for our inability to join a video call on time. Whereas in reality, we were frantically trying to find a clean "zoom" shirt while simultaneously moving day-old wine glasses out of the camera shot.

59 days to first meme

President Joe Biden has undoubtedly had some big wins thus far in his presidency, including the covid relief package and vaccinating more than 125 million citizens. However, something's been missing...

A meme-able moment! Well, here it is... his first meme-able moment came as he ascended the stairs to Air Force One.
