It's May 11th, 2022

Happy hump day, and thanks for reading The New Yak Times!

Starting a business is filled with ebbs and flows, sprinkled with moments of excitement and despair.

Read the Oliver Charles update to learn what our day to day schedules are like.

But first... the week's top stories are:

Online Adderall

Talking Points:

  • If you're on social media as much as I am, you've probably noticed all the videos about ADHD, which, it turns out, are ads for companies selling ADHD medication online.
  • One of the biggest companies selling prescriptions is the telehealth startup Cerebral. Last week they announced they would pause new prescriptions for Adderall and other ADHD medications.
  • Some former employees accuse Cerebral of overprescribing meds with their VP of Engineering going so far as suing the company for overprescribing meds.

NFTs Were a Fad... Maybe

Talking Points:

  • Turns out NFTs aren't a good hedge against the market. The number of active NFT wallets reportedly fell 88% from its November peak, according to the Wall St. Journal.
  • While some sites dispute the claim saying that blockchain data doesn't support it, there's no question that NFTs are trending down, with many of the most popular projects down 30% from recent highs.
  • The NFT bubble is seemingly popping against the backdrop of the most expensive physical art sale of time. $195 million for a silkscreen Marilyn Monroe portrait by Andy Warhol.

Kentucky Derby

Talking Points:

  • The 184th Kentuck Derby took place this weekend, and the least favored horse to win came from behind in the final stretch to take home the gold or $1.8 million in prize money.
  • The horse, Rich Strick, had 80 - 1 odds going into the race and was a last-minute addition after another horse scratched out. It was the second-biggest upset in the history of the race.
  • If you bet $100 on Rich Strick initially, you would have walked away with a cool $8,000. One lucky person bet $5 on the top 3 winners and won more than $70,000.

Formula 1 is Taking Over

Talking Points:

  • Have you noticed that everyone seems to be talking about Formula 1? That's probably because of the Netflix series Drive to Survive, a behind-the-scenes docuseries about the sport.
  • Since the release of the show, US interest in F1 has exploded. ESPN reported that the average American viewership of F1 was up about 56% last year compared with the 2020 season. The 2021 final reached more than 100 million people globally.
  • The sport's surge in popularity is not only due to the Netflix series but also due to its Americanization. Some worry the new direction will damage F1's reputation and alienate long-time fans.

Oliver Charles Update

Ok, so what does the day to day of Oliver Charles really look like. I went to the source and asked Slater and Jack to share the schedules.

I would share mine, but it's just 10 hrs of looking at social media followed by 5 hrs of posting on LinkedIn under anonymous accounts.

Slater and Jack's Daily Schedule:

7:00am - 9:00am: Send each other funny TikToks and tweets

9:00am - 10:00am: Phone call to discuss the day's tasks

10:00am - 12:00pm: Send emails to friends and family asking them to buy sweaters

12:00pm - 1:00pm: Short walk to get chicken tenders from Safeway

1:00pm - 2:00pm: Argue about the width and depth ratio of our v-neck

2:00pm - 3:30pm: Siesta (separate rooms)

3:30pm - 4:00pm: Calisthenics (same room)

4:00pm - 6:00pm: Discuss strategy for creating community

6:00pm - 6:30pm: Tobais's daily performance review

6:30pm - 8:00pm: Dinner and girlfriend time

8:00pm - 10:00pm: Do some real work, create content, examine the books, develop new products, etc

10:00pm - 2:00am: Watch Formula 1 highlights

So there you have it. That's how the sausage is made. That's the dirty truth of how a sweater empire is actually built.

When we're selling a million sweaters a year, you won't be hearing about the daily walks to get chicken tenders or the endless discussions on creating community.

You'll be hearing about how we won a particular deal or how we almost failed, but as someone wise once told me, it's not about the destination, it's about the journey; the journey from zero to 1.

Until next time, keep building 💪.
