It's April 20th, 2022

Happy humpday, and thanks for reading The New Yak Times!

I hope you had a lovely holiday weekend. As I like to say, the best way to spend a long weekend is to simply ignore it and keep working.

More on what I was working on this weekend in the Oliver Charles update.

But first... the week's top stories are:

  • The Elon Twitter Saga
  • Happy Passover
  • Happy Easter
  • Wind Energy Is #2
  • Oliver Charles Update

The Elon Twitter Saga

Talking Points:

  • You might remember that 2 weeks ago, I wrote about Elon Musk buying 9.2% of Twitter and joining the board. Well, it turns out that 9.2% isn't enough. He wants 100%.
  • Just a day after the board seat announcement, Twitter retracted their offer. Shortly after, Elon offered to purchase the entire company for $43B, a 50% premium on the current share price (at the time of offering).
  • Since the offer was made, a debate has erupted, and the Twitter board issued a poison pill to deter a takeover. Although, Elon did say he has a plan B.

Happy Passover!

Talking Points:

  • This weekend was the Jewish holiday, Passover, which commemorates the Exodus, the liberation of Israelites from slavery in Egypt.
  • The Passover Seder is a ritual that marks the beginning of the holiday. During Seder, family members gather to tell the story of exodus from Egypt, drink wine, eat symbolic food, and break matzah.
  • Matzah is an unleavened flatbread eaten during Passover because when the Jewish people were fleeing Egypt, they didn't have time to let the bread rise.

Happy Easter

Talking Points:

  • Easter was also this weekend, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.
  • The symbol of Easter is an egg, which stands for the rebirth of Jesus. How the Easter Bunny, a mammal that does not lay eggs, got involved is a mystery as perplexing as the resurrection.
  • Nevertheless, the Easter Bunny has been cemented in culture with a Santa Clause-like aura. In the US, people spent a collective $21.6B on Easter decorations in 2021. That includes 180M eggs.

Wind Is #2

Talking Points:

  • For the first time, on March 29th, energy generated using wind power surpassed energy generated using coal fuels and nuclear.
  • While wind is still relatively far behind natural gas, it's rapidly making its way to the #2 spot, surpassing coal and nuclear again on April 14th.
  • The country's combined wind and solar output doubled between 2008 and 2018, while coal fell by more than half over the same period. Since March 2019, wind and solar output nearly doubled again, according to the US Energy Information Administration.

Oliver Charles Update

My weekend was filled with SEO research. If you're anything like I was last Friday, you might be wondering what SEO means. A quick Google search will tell you that it means Search Engine Optimization.

Why should you care about this? Well, because I'm the new head of SEO at Oliver Charles. Don't worry. I won't be giving up any of my duties as the writer of The New Yak Times. With any luck, I'll get to hire an overseas virtual assistant or maybe even an unpaid intern to assist with the additional workload.

It's an important responsibility (obviously, they trusted me with it). Still, it's not something people think about, or even know about, so I'm going to break down SEO for you.

SEO is essentially the same thing as wooing a romantic partner. Except that romantic partner doesn't know or care that you exist and is currently dating a whole host of much richer and bigger (wink wink) partners.

And just like any romantic interest that's way out of your league, the fastest way to get them to notice you is with unsolicited messages sent via the internet.

Good thing I know what Google's love language is... status. If a website that Google already admires refers to your website, then Google will start to notice you.

The solution is obvious. Invent a fake character with an impressive backstory and apply for writing positions at the top publishers in the country.

Once I've successfully secured a job, I will begin writing and publishing stories about Oliver Charles.

It's the perfect plan. Plus, I should have no problem getting a job at The New York Times. I've been writing for the NYT for the last year and a half.

Until next time, keep building 💪.
