The Slap Heard Around The World

Talking Points:

  • You probably know that the Oscars were this weekend. Because, unless you're living under a rock, you've likely heard that Will Smith slapped the **** out of Chris Rock after he made a joke about Will Smith's wife.
  • The slap was so shocking that it overshadowed other interesting things about the Oscars. About 16M viewed this year, up 58% from last year.
  • Apple won Best Picture for CODA, becoming the first streaming service to win an Oscar. Troy Kotsur was the first deaf man to be nominated and the second to win an Oscar, also for CODA. Finally, Jason Derulo fell down the stairs.

A Fertilizer Shortage

Talking Points:

  • In a previous issue, I wrote about potential shortages related to the war in Ukraine. One of those products is fertilizer, and its scarcity will have massive ripple effects across the globe.
  • If Ukraine is the world's breadbasket, Russia is the world's sewer as the largest exporter of fertilizer. US sanctions have essentially erased the Russian supply.
  • High prices have farmers worldwide scaling back their fertilizer use and reducing the amount of land they're planting. Leading experts warn of an impending global food shortage. Food prices have already increased an estimated 232% since last year.

Frozen Student Loans

Talking Points:

  • The Biden Administration has signaled the possibility of extending the federal student loan payment freeze beyond May 1.
  • The Education Department recently emailed unusual guidance to the companies that manage its $1.6 trillion student loan portfolio. The email read: "Don't reach out to borrowers about that May 1 deadline."
  • This will be the 6th time the government has frozen student loan payments, and the longer they stay frozen the less politically viable it'll be to unfreeze them.

Rhino Bonds

Talking Points:

  • The World Bank started selling the world's first wildlife bond, raising $150M that will be used to protect black rhinos. The bond is a first-of-its-kind, outcome-based financial instrument for conservation.
  • Its success is measured by the increase in the black rhino population. The rhino population will need to increase by more than 4% per year for bondholders to receive the maximum payment, which is roughly $13.5M.
  • The minimum investment in the bond, which will be finalized on March 31, is $100K. If this works, it can be replicated and applied to a whole range of sustainable projects.

Oliver Charles Update

Happy Wednesday! Today is a particularly special Wednesday because it also happens to be Jack's birthday.

While Jack's birthday is the main celebration this week, we are also celebrating the launch of a new(ish) product.

Before I dive into that product, I want to talk about sizing.

As someone with 0 background in fashion, I was astonished by how poorly sizing's done. Just read this.

For those who didn't know, before the 1800s, clothing didn't have sizes. Everything was custom-tailored or homemade.

Then, nearly 100 years went by, and long story short, the National Bureau of Standards created a version of sizing that's familiar to us all today.

I have nothing against the good bureaucrats at the NBS, but I think somewhere along the way, they got a little lazy.

I feel like they gave up after inventing small, medium, and large.

"Just add another 'extra'... no one will notice," they concluded...

Who wants to be called an extra extra large?

So I've decided to develop my own naming convention for sizes based on something everyone knows and loves, dogs.

XXS = Yorkipoo
XS = French Bulldog
S = Corgi
M = Australian Shepherd
L = Golden Retriever
XL = German Shepherd
XXL = Great Dane

Is there a better way to name sizes? There has to be, but until we figure it out... we're annoucing the official launch of our yorkipoo sweaters!

Until next time, keep building 💪.
