Happy Wednesday, and thanks for reading The New Yak Times!

Who's Writing These Articles?

Talking Points:

  • Last week, Bloomberg shared an article that was comically out of touch... naturally, the internet roasted them. The headline reads, "Inflation Stings Most If You Earn Less Than $300K," followed by 4 helpful tips: "1) Take the bus 2) Don't buy in bulk 3) Try lentils instead of meat 4)  Nobody said this would be fun."
  • I cringe just typing it out. Is this a stark example of how out of touch with reality Bloomberg columnists have become? Or is this just good marketing? It's probably both.
  • The article isn't that bad and makes some decent points. What I do know is that it's receiving more attention than it deserves. For that, I must tip my hat to whoever pinned the headline.

Bidens Says Brace for Cyberattacks

Talking Points:

  • President Joe Biden warned Monday about new indications of possible Russian cyberattacks. He urged the U.S. private sector: “Harden your cyber defense immediately.”
  • Biden went on to specifically plead for the companies working critical infrastructure to brace for a cyber attack.
  • Hackers working for Russian intelligence are considered among the world’s most sophisticated. Putin has the ability to fire back at sanctions, particularly as he grows frustrated with the lack of progress in Ukraine.

Netflix Cracks Down

Talking Points:

  • I'm still using the Netflix account belonging to the family that previously owned my Roku TV. Now Netflix is tearing us apart, destroying a beautiful 5-year relationship, just to increase their bottom line.
  • Netflix said it won't ban password sharing, but those who do it will have to pay. Password crackdowns could be one way Netflix adds another 10 to 20 million subscribers in its US market alone.
  • The move comes as Netflix's user growth wanes while its content budget grows. This is still just a test and not rolled out in the US... yet!

Saint Paddy's Day

Talking Points:

  • On Thursday, we celebrated the 1000-year-old Irish tradition of breaking lent for a day to drink, eat, and celebrate - otherwise known as Saint Paddy's Day.
  • While the Irish have been celebrating Saint Paddy's since the 9th or 10th century, the holiday really picked up steam in the US following an influx of Irish immigrants fleeing the Great Potato Famine in 1845.
  • Now, the Saint Paddy's Day parade in New York is the world‘s oldest and largest civilian parade with 150K participants and 3.1M viewers.

Oliver Charles Update

So how do we get a measly .0023% of The New York City population to stop by our pop-up this weekend?

There seems to be only one correct answer: guerilla marketing!

I've come up with a few concepts using a framework I like to call C.H.I.M.P.

Compelling: Should pique curiosity.

Helpful: Should be easy for people to engage with the brand.

Interruption: Breaks potential customers away from their routines.

Memorable: Something people will inevitably tell their friends about.

Preposterous: Leave people perplexed with what they saw/experienced.

With that in mind, here are a few concepts that we are trying. Let me know which you like the best.

Number 1: Head over to the Charging Bull on Wall Street and cover it head to toe in genuine yak fur. Then hire someone to shave it using a comically large trimmer. Then give the fur to passerby along with information on the pop-up.

Number 2: Rent a herd of yak and ride them around the city passing out brochures about the pop-up to kind New Yorkers on the streets.

Number 3: Hire attractive people to go to all the trendiest cafes/bars/clubs in Soho. Then have them loudly ask each other, "Where did you get such a nice sweater?!" The answer is information on the pop-up.

Let me know which one you like the best!

Until next time, keep building 💪.
