OLIVER CHARLES - The New Yak Times - Business And Financial News Using Memes

Hello 👋. I'm Tobias the "100% real" CMO of Oliver Charles. This is my weekly update as Slater, Jack, and I build Oliver Charles in public.

It's February 23rd, 2022

Dear readers,

I hope you had a lovely long weekend.

Like most holidays, I don't celebrate Presidents Day - not because I think presidents aren't worth celebrating, but because I'm addicted to the hustle.

I live for the monotonous switching of tabs while staring longingly at a computer screen, desperately attempting to complete a task that ultimately won't matter.

I prefer the click of keys as my fingers pass over them to the sounds of nature. I yearn for late nights and early mornings.

It brings me great solace knowing that while my adversaries are celebrating Presidents Day, I continue to build.

Enough about me, though. Let's talk about Oliver Charles and The New Yak Times.

The New Yak Times

This is the 4th issue of the Times since we changed formats, and I would like to know how we are doing.

The numbers have essentially held steady, but analytics don't give us the full story.

For all we know, people might be opening their weekly email and then immediately closing it without reading a single word.

So how do we find out if people are actually reading? More importantly, how can we tell if people like it?

In the past, I've hidden inappropriate words in the text, just to see if people catch them. That always makes for a good laugh but doesn't always provide many meaningful insights.

This time, I'm gonna keep it simple and provide an incentive.

The first 5 people to complete the short 5 min survey, will get a New Yak Times hat for FREE.

We Are In This Together

You can't build a company without listening to your customers. We've been serious about that since day one.

Heck, our first sweater was designed almost entirely by our Customer Advisory Board.

Building with our customers has become core to our brand and will continue to be going forward.

The Odyssey of Oliver Charles

I believe Oliver Charles has a long and prosperous journey ahead of it.

Throughout that journey, customers will come and go, but their imprint on the brand will stay.

What they say to friends and family long after they've purchased will ultimately define the success of Oliver Charles.

Looking For Approval

This meme got me thinking... how can we guarantee our customers will say good things about Oliver Charles?

Slater and Jack believe it stems from having a superior product and a brand people feel a connection to.

I, on the other hand, think it's directly correlated with the number of compliments an individual receives while wearing an Oliver Charles sweater.

Imagine this...

You walk into work one day sporting your new OC sweater. As you head to the break room to acquire your first cup of delicious coffee, he VP of Regional Sales, aka the bulldog of the B-level executives, stops you in your tracks.

A tense moment follows as you stand there desperately wondering how to play this one cool.

Then like the sweet mountain breeze kissing a snow-covered peak, your boss's boss says, "Hey, nice sweater," right before gliding away.

If that happened, I guarantee you'd tell everyone and their dog about Oliver Charles.

Good Idea In Theory

So here's what I propose...

We hire actors to follow new customers around and give them compliments on their new sweaters.

The average actor for hire only costs around $50/hour. Even if it takes them 3 hours to track down a customer and deliver the compliment, it's still a positive return on investment.

Unfortunately, Slater and Jack have yet to come around to my idea... they keep saying something about it being creepy.

In the meantime, I guess I'll stick to writing The New Yak Times.

Until next time, keep building 💪.
