It's January 12th, 2022

Dear readers,

Happy Wednesday, especially to Jeff Bezos, who I'm sure is a reader of the New Yak Times.

Why? Because today is Jeff's birthday, which got me thinking about a few things.

1) What do you get the second richest man in the world for his birthday? Here's an idea.

2) What did Amazon look like when it was the same age as Oliver Charles. More on this in my update.

RIP Bob Sagat

Talking Points:

  • Bob Saget, arguably known best as the wholesome patriarch, Danny Tanner, on the sitcom Full House, was found dead in his hotel room. The cause of death is still unknown. He was 65 years old.
  • In addition to playing Danny on Full House, Sagat was the host of America's Funniest Home Videos.
  • Sagat set out to rebrand as a foul mouth, edgy stand-up comedian following his sitcom days. Releasing That's What I'm Talkin' About, which was nominated for a Grammy in 2014.

Everything Is Closed

Talking Points:

  • With the Omicron variant sweeping across the nation like a TikTok trend, businesses and institutions alike are struggling to stay open. It's estimated that 5M workers had to stay home last week. Or 3% of the entire workforce.
  • Schools are being hit particularly hard as unions vote to close schools and substitutes are in short supply. In one case, a superintendent stepped in to teach physics.
  • Airlines are another industry being walloped by the variant. Alaska Airlines canceled 10% of their flights due to an unprecedented number of employees calling out sick.

Novak Djokovic Goes to Australia

Talking Points:

  • Novak Djokovic, the number 1 ranked men's tennis player globally, was barred from entering Australia for the Australian Open because he's not vaccinated.
  • Initially, the tournament had barred him from competing because of his vaccination status but eventually decided to make a medical exception. The Australian government did not want to make the same exception.
  • Eventually, on Monday, a judge ruled that Novak could enter the country to compete because his recent infection qualified as a medical exception. Needless to say, the whole ordeal sparked a debate on both sides about preferential treatment.

December Job Numbers

Talking Points:

  • The December job numbers were released on the 8th, and they were a bit confusing. For one, we added only 199,000 jobs vs the 422,000 expected.
  • At the same time, unemployment declined more than expected, to 3.9% from 4.2% in November. The lowest it's ever been. How can we add fewer jobs than expected while simultaneously lowering unemployment more than expected?
  • Well, the answer lies in the number of people that are leaving the workforce. In fact, more than 2M people have left the workforce since the start of the pandemic. That means two things: labor shortages will continue into 2022, and inflation will likely follow.

Oliver Charles Update

Oliver Charles update

Two years into business, Amazon looked just like Oliver Charles.

For example, after two years, Amazon had raised $54 million after IPOing and had a million customers.

Similarly, after two years, Oliver Charles took out a 2nd credit card with a $5K spending limit and celebrated the 1000th customer.

So yeah... maybe not exactly like Amazon. But as all my ex-lovers have said, how fast it happens doesn't matter.

More importantly, we aren't trying to be Amazon.

So what are we trying to be? Since the beginning, we've said that we want to be THE sweater company. When you think of sweaters, you should think of Oliver Charles.

Is that the right approach? Should we be THE yak wool company?

Who knows (hopefully Slater and Jack), but that's what we are spending the next few days and weeks thinking about. I'll be sure to let you know when/if we come up with an answer.

Until next time, keep building 💪.
