It's December 8th, 2021

Dear readers,

Happy hump day! The whole team is in Colorado right now enjoying the sweet, sweet mountain air.

My one observation is it's very cold. The sweaters are great thermoregulators and quite warm, but they are still thin.

We like to think of them as a base or mid-layer.

Why am I telling you this? Because when it gets really cold out, it forces me to betray my beloved sweater and sometimes wear something else... more about this in my update.

The Olympic Boycott

Talking Points:

  • Late Sunday night, the Biden Administration announced that it would boycott the Beijing Olympics diplomatically. Athletes would still be allowed to compete, but US officials would not be attending any events.
  • Early Monday, China’s government threatened “firm countermeasures” if the boycott went ahead and noted that no US official had formally been invited to attend the Games.
  • The move was prompted, at least in part, by the disappearance of Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai after she accused the accused former vice-premier of China of sexual assault.

Spotify Wrapped

Talking Points:

  • It's that wonderful time of the year when everyone posts their Spotify Wrapped - a recap of the previous year's listening habits. It's met with both joyous applause and spiteful disdain.
  • The popularity of Spotify Wrapped led to a 21% bump in app downloads in the 1st week of December 2020. Over 90M people engaged with Spotify Wrapped in 2020.
  • This year the top artist was Bad Bunny (2nd year in a row). The top song was "drivers license" by Olivia Rodrigo. The top podcast was The Joe Rogan Experience (which they recently purchased for $100M).

National Coin Shortage

Talking Points:

  • You've probably seen some signs recently requesting that patrons pay with exact change only due to a national coin shortage.
  • Since July 2020, the US has been experiencing a coin shortage. The problem is that COVID-19 is causing a slowdown in coin circulation. Fewer consumers use the change they receive in cash transactions to make other purchases. Instead of going back into circulation, the coins are piling up in piggy banks.
  • The Fed produces more than enough coins, but they generally account for about 17% of them going back into circulation. So if the coin shortage is going to end, it's up to us.

Square is Now Block

Talking Points:

  • Last week I wrote about Jack Dorsey leaving Twitter. This week he's in the news again because he's changed the name of the other company he's CEO of from Square to Block.
  • Block, you guessed it, is a reference to the blockchain and a signal that the payment processing firm is going all-in on cryptocurrency.
  • It's a little unfair to say Square changed its name. Square will still exist, and Block will become the holding company of Square, Cash App, Tidal, and a bunch of other blockchain ideas.

Not Wearing an OC Sweater

Oliver Charles update

Sometimes, unfortunately, I must wear something other than my Oliver Charles sweater. It happens rarely, but it does happen.

One thing that working at Oliver Charles has taught is how to buy better and buy less. So in the last year, I've spent a lot of time upgrading my wardrobe.

This has made parting with my beloved OC much easier, but it's also given me a new perspective on living.

There are a few things in life that I constantly use, like multiple times every day. For those things, you should never be cheap.

You'll never regret it, but you'll always regret not investing in something you use often.

I think it's an important lesson that's often forgotten.

Until next time, keep building 💪.
