It's December 1st, 2021

Dear readers,
Happy first day of December! It's not every day that Wednesday falls on the first of a month. In fact, it only happened twice this year.

The time between Thanksgiving and the new year is my favorite. It's the only time of the year when you can get away with doing pretty much no work.

"Let's circle back after the first"

Everyone just accepts it as an excuse. It's kind of insane. But hey, who am I to complain?

Personally, I like to use the downtime to ponder life's biggest and most elusive mysteries.

More in my update.

The Omicron Covid Variant

Talking Points:

  • You likely know everything about Omicron already so I'm going to cover some things that you might not know.
  • Why are viruses named using the Greek Alphabet? The World Health Organization (WHO) names them this way to 1) avoid "offending any cultural, social, national, regional, professional or ethnic groups" (sorry Greece). And 2) to make it easy for the public to recognize each variant, rather than the scientific name.
  • How'd we get to Omicron from Delta? Other variants that turned out to be not such a big deal have been named. However, the WHO skipped the names NU and XI because they are common names.

Jack Dorsey Steps Down

Talking Points:

  • Twitter's CEO and co-founder, Jack Dorsey, announced he was stepping down on Monday.
  • Dorsey has served two stints as the CEO. From 2006 - 2008 and then 2015 - 2021. Between 2008 - 2015 he founded Square, another multibillion-dollar publically traded company, and has been serving as CEO of both companies ever since.
  • Dorsey's departure was met positively as the stock jumped 12% after the announcement. He's faced a lot of criticism on how the platform manages its relationship with free speech. Twitter's also only made a profit twice in the last 15 years.

Thanksgiving

Talking Points:

  • I don't have to tell you that last Thursday was Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is seemingly the only holiday that has built an unrivaled reputation for family drama. You never hear about the crazy uncle and woke nephew getting into it at a 4th of July BBQ.
  • It's likely because people get two days off work and thus decide to travel, which leads to more family gatherings.
  • More than 2.3 million Americans flew for the holiday, only a few 100,000 short of 2019. More than 53.4 million people were expected to have traveled, still below the pre-pandemic numbers.

What Is Art Basel?

Talking Points:

  • A lot of people would tell you Art Basel is a giant party. However, Art Basel is really an international art fair staged annually in Basel, Switzerland; Miami Beach, Florida, and Hong Kong.
  • The fair has been around since 1970 and is one of the most well-known, important art events in the world, attracting the best artist, collectors, and celebrities. It draws roughly 80,000 visitors each year.
  • This year's event is heavily focused on the emergence of NFTs as a medium and a means of ownership. It'll likely be attended by a new crop of wealthy NFT collectors.

Will We Ever Truly Know?

Oliver Charles update

The thing about entrepreneurship (and life) is that it's tough to know if your decisions are correct. This is particularly true when things are going well.

For example, this past week was BFCM (as we say in the industry), and we did very well. What I want to know is, could we have done better?

The answer is undoubtedly, yes, but we'll never actually know.

We can't go back in time and do it all over again. For all we know we could have run it flawlessly and any minor change could have resulted in a lesser result. Or vice versa.

That's the thing; you have to live with your decisions.

A lot of people might say, "the trick is to make decisions quickly and with conviction."

But they don't know what they are talking about either, even if that worked for them in the past.

If they played it back, it might turn out that moving slowly without confidence produces a better outcome.

Like the meme above, we'll never truly know the answer. And that brings me solace. Knowing that no one knows what the hell they are doing.

Until next time, keep building 💪.
