It's November 10th, 2021

Dear readers,

Happy Wednesday! This is my 40th issue of the New Yak Times. Does anyone remember what it used to be called? Before I was hired?

Over the course of writing the newsletter, Elon Musk has been the most featured personality. Almost every single week there's some story about him. It's remarkable.

More on Elon and lessons to be learned in my update.

Let's get into it!

  • Daylight Savings Ends
  • Peloton Crashes
  • Elon's Twitter Poll
  • All I Want For Xmas Is You
  • Oliver Charles Update

Daylight Savings Ends

Talking Points:

  • Daylight savings time has ended, which probably means the clock in your car is now an hour ahead. If you've been reading The Times since the beginning, some of this may sound familiar.
  • It's often mistakenly believed that daylight savings was started to give farmers more time to harvest crops. That's not true. It was started to save energy, which it doesn't.
  • It actually has a bunch of negative effects. Most notably is a measurable decrease in national productivity, aka GDP, because most of the nation is sleepy at the same time. Arizona and Hawaii don't recognize daylight savings.

Peloton Crashes

Talking Points:

  • On Friday, shares of Peloton, the darling of the pandemic, slid more the 35% after annual sales forecasts were cut by as much as $1B.
  • The in-home fitness company certainly had its day in the sun during the pandemic, claiming nearly 500% growth after its IPO just before the lockdowns began. Unfortunately, that momentum naturally began to slide as the world reopened and people started to return to their gym memberships. Peloton is down 63% year to date.
  • Something that's always amazed me about Peloton is that its instructors earn upwards of $500,000 a year. Not including sponsorships.

Elon's Twitter Poll

Talking Points:

  • On Saturday, Tesla CEO, Elon Musk asked Twitter if he should sell 10% of Tesla stock while questioning unrealized gains as a form of tax avoidance. He said he'd abide by the outcome of the poll.
  • Well, the internet spoke, and 57.9% of the 3.5M people that voted told him to sell 10% of his stake or roughly $20B worth of stock.
  • Since the poll, Tesla's stock has slid by almost 13%. While it's unclear whether or not he'll sell, the market seems to think he will. In fact, the SEC is probably going to make him sell.

All I Want For Xmas Is You

Talking Points:

  • In 1994, singer-songwriter Mirah Carry released the hit single, All I Want for Christmas Is You - a song that has arguably become the most successful single of all time.
  • Each year starting around November, the sweet sound of Mirah's voice slowly starts to permeate every facet of our lives. That's not a joke. The song is played so much that it's won 3 Guinness World Records.
  • Not only is it widely popular everywhere, but it's also lucrative. It's estimated that she's made $60M from the song alone and earns about $600K a month during the holidays.

What Can We Learn From Elon Musk

Oliver Charles update

How will Elon be remembered? Will he be remembered as the mastermind who colonized Mars? The 21st century's Henery Ford? The world's richest person?

I certainly know how I'll remember him: the world's greatest marketer. The man is genius in many areas but second to none when it comes to marketing.

Hence, that's why it feels like every single time I sit down to write The New Yak Times, there's a story about Elon.

So what can Oliver Charles learn from Elon?

After much thought, I've concluded that the answer is just to be yourself. Don't hold back on being yourself.

Elon seems to be gung-ho on doing whatever he wants, however he wants. No pandering and no wasting time or energy worrying about what others will think and do.

In my opinion, that's the key to his genius.

Until next time, keep building 💪.

Best,
