Dear readers,

Happy Wednesday! Halloween is right around the corner and I'm very excited to dress up.

I loved Halloween as a kid... me and all my friends would take all our candy, dump it out in front of each other, and spend hours creating a complex monetary system using the different types as various stores of value.

I think it's the first time I truly fell in love with capitalism. More on Halloween in my update.

Let's get into it!

Dune Was A Smash Hit!

Talking Points:

  • The highly anticipated theatrical release of Dune was a smash hit! The movie was adapted from the world's best-selling science fiction novel, which is notoriously complex and challenging to follow.
  • This was part 1, and producers were so concerned that the movie would flop that they waited to greenlight part 2 until after the numbers came out.
  • And boy, did the numbers come out strong. The film quickly came in #1 domestically with a $40.1 million debut. Its cumulative worldwide box office earnings currently stand at $220.7 million. The film's budget was a hefty $165 million.

Is Inflation Transitory?

Talking Points:

  • No one knows for sure. Intelligent people are on both spectrums of the argument, with some saying we are about to experience hyperinflation (Jack Dorsey) and others saying inflation will ease in 2022 (The Fed).
  • On the one hand, many price increases are being driven by COVID-related supply chain issues. Once those clear up, inflation will level off. On the other hand, the government has and is pumping trillions of dollars into the economy. More money equals more inflation.
  • At the moment, inflation is hovering around 5.4%. Meaning that $100 at the beginning of the year is worth $94.5 today.

Mix And Match Boosters

Talking Points:

  • The CDC and the FDA have now approved booster shots for all three vaccines. In fact, they even took a step further and approved the mixing of shots.
  • That means older adults, people with certain medical conditions, and those whose jobs or living situations regularly expose them to the virus can opt for a booster dose of any of the three vaccines.
  • The approval is a mixed bag. While many poor countries have yet to vaccinate even 10% of their populations, using doses on those already vaccinated seems selfish, risky, and unnecessary.

$1.2B For Some Spanx!

Talking Points:

  • Last week, Shapewear maker Spanx sold a majority stake to Blackstone at a valuation of $1.2 billion. Spanx was started in 1998 by Sara Blakely with her own $5,000 in savings, which she had earned from selling fax machines.
  • Without ever taking outside investment, Blakely grew Spanx to $10 million in revenue in her second year in business, was named Oprah's favorite product of the year, and became the youngest self-made female billionaire.
  • After the deal closes, Blakely will maintain a significant stake in Spanx and transition to serve as executive chairwoman. Blakely celebrated the sale with her 500 employees by gifting them round trip first-class plane tickets to anywhere in the world and a $10,000 bonus each.

Getting Through The Busy Season

Oliver Charles update

It's true, the first time I fell in love with capitalism was Halloween night 1993. We were trading candy so aggressively you would have thought it was Wall Street in the 80s.

Suddenly, the value of Kit Kats started to take a nosedive, caused by the neighbors giving out full-size bars and flooding the market.

While kids were frantically offloading Kit Kats, I started buying as many as I could, and before long, I had corned the entire Kit Kat market.

The next thing I knew, people were begging me for Kit Kats as I artificially tapered the supply to boost prices.

I think about that moment a lot. Just as I once cornered the Kit Kat market, I will now corner the Yak Wool Sweater market.

Until next time, keep building 💪.

Best, Tobias
