It's October 20th, 2021

Dear readers,

You've made it to Wednesday. Dare I say congratulations? It's a weird time of the year. Summer is over, but the Holidays are still far away.

You wake up freezing, so you grab an oversized coat only to find yourself sweating by mid-day. This wouldn't happen in an Oliver Charles sweater... just saying.

On top of being both hot and cold, work is crushing. You're either scrambling to finish stuff before your boss takes off for the Holidays or prepping for the holiday shopping season. The future is bleak.

More on coping with the busy season in my update.

Let's get into it!

People Are Quitting Their Jobs

Talking Points:

  • Last week, the Labor Department said that 4.3M people quit their jobs in August - the largest-ever reported number, representing around 3% of the entire workforce.
  • Why? Well, for one, the job market is hot. Everyone is trying to hire, everyone is raising wages, and there are more options. Basically, no one wants to go back to working 12-hour shifts at Mcdonald's for $7.50/hr.
  • The Pandemic broke the cycle for many people. This becomes more and more clear as you look at the data. 892,000 workers left restaurants, bars, and hotels, and 721,000 left their retail gigs.

Vaccine Mandates Take Effect

Talking Points:

  • Amid mass employee exodus, companies are now starting to fire unvaccinated employees as mandate deadlines kick in.
  • While headlines read, "1000s fired after not getting vaccinated." The reality is that it's generally less than 2% or 3% of a given workforce.
  • Many people talk a big game when it comes to quitting over vaccine mandates, but when it comes down to it, they are way more likely to get vaccinated than they are to cause a wave of resignations. For example, one Hospital reported that 15% of employees were unvaccinated this summer, but only 2% remained unvaccinated by the deadline.

Captin Kirk Goes To Space (For Real)

Talking Points:

  • Last Wednesday, Captin Kirk, aka William Shatner, became the oldest person to travel to space. He is the oldest astronaut and the only person to act as a fictional space explorer then actually go to space.
  • The flight took place aboard Jeff Bezos Blue Origin Rocket. It was completely comped for Captin Kirk because of Bezos's affinity for Star Trek.
  • Upon landing, Shatner gave a short speech about the significance of seeing the earth from space. "This air, which is keeping us alive, is thinner than your skin. It's a sliver. It's immeasurably small when you think in terms of the universe," Shatner said.

Bitcoin ETF

Talking Points:

  • On Tuesday, the ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF began trading at $40 a share under the ticker symbol "BITO" and finished the day up 5%.
  • The ProShares fund is the first of what is expected to be several ETFs that track Bitcoin futures to debut on Wall Street.
  • The ETF's debut is somewhat of a watershed moment for cryptocurrencies as it lends a bit of much-needed credibility. The price of Bitcoin has reacted accordingly, climbing within 1% of its previous all-time high.

Oliver Charles update

As we wrapped up our pop-up last week, there was but a moment to breathe before we dove into launching new colors, new styles, and prepping for BFCM.

Being a founder or, in my case, working for a startup is a game of deferred pleasure.

You work so hard for so long and have seemingly nothing to show for it. Then eventually, one day, it slowly starts to pay off. Suddenly the same amount of work starts producing better and better results.

The trick is persisting through the moments when you feel like a nobody.

Luckily, in my case, it's not so hard cause I'm enjoying the journey. Plus, I get to work with two amazing people

Until next time, keep building 💪.

Best, Tobias
