Dear readers,

Happy hump day. We spent this past weekend selling sweaters in Boulder, Colorado where, much to our dismay, temperatures reached 108 degrees (according to my car's thermostat).

Despite the weather, we were still able to sell sweaters. More on this in my update.

Let's get into it!

The Highly-Anticipated Return Of Steve

Talking Points:

  • Steve's historic return will only make sense if you were born or had a kid between 1991 and 1998. That's because kids born during that particular time had the pleasure of growing up with Blue's Clues.
  • Hailed as "one of the most successful, critically acclaimed, and ground-breaking preschool series of all time," Blue's Clues was a staple in households across America.
  • Then it all came crashing down when the beloved host Steve disappeared in 2002. Then in honor of the show's 25th anniversary, he reappeared with a heartfelt video. It struck a chord with everyone that grew up watching Blue's Clues.

Biden Loses His Patience

Talking Points:

  • Unless you've been living under a rock, you've heard about Biden's vaccine mandate. The mandate is set to apply to all federal employees and private employers with more than 100 employees.
  • In short, the Biden Administration gave the workplace safety regulators, OSHA, the power to require vaccinations against COVID because unvaccinated employees are a workplace safety hazard.
  • The mandate will be hard to enforce, but the point is that it's now enforceable. A good analogy is the speed limit on the highway. While there aren't enough cops to stop everyone from speeding, most people still drive the speed limit.

Talking Points:

  • On Saturday, 18-year-old Emma Raducanu of the UK became the newest tennis sensation after winning the US Open.
  • Not only is Emma only 18-years-old, but she is also the only person to win a grand slam tournament as a qualifier. That means she had to win a series of matches before the tournament, unlike those that ranked high enough to be invited.
  • She did it style too and did not lose a set in 10 matches, a remarkable 20-set streak. Finally, she was the first woman from Britain to win a Grand Slam since Virginia Wade won Wimbledon in 1977.

AOC At The Met Gala

Talking Points:

  • Monday night was the famed Met Gala. What is the Met Gala, and why was I not invited?
  • Formally known as the Costume Institute Gala, it's a charity event for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. An individual ticket costs $30,000. But more than anything, the Met Gala is a fashion show and a chance for people to make a statement. AOC did just that by ironically wearing a tax the rich dress. Next year (fingers crossed), someone might be wearing an Oliver Charles Sweater.
  • Even if you can afford a ticket, that does not mean you can attend. Qualifications for inclusion have to do with buzz, achievement, and the ability to rock some fashionable threads.

Oliver Charles update

As we pulled up to the Pearl Street mall in Boulder, Colorado this weekend, I glanced at the car's thermometer, which read 108°.

My heart sank. It was supposed to be cold. Last year at this time, it was snowing in Boulder!

I quickly pushed past my surprise and started thinking, how the hell we're going to sell sweaters in such heat. I took a quick inventory and hatched the perfect plan.

What's heat independent? Something people need no matter how hot it is outside? That's right, you guessed it, cotton tote bags.

Lucky I had some OC totes on hand. Next, I thought, what else do people love, and like a brick, it hit me.

People love free stuff. A plan quickly began to come together...

I could give away a free sweater with the purchase of a tote.

Just like that, I was selling $220 totes left and right.

Until next time, keep building 💪.

Best, Tobias
