It's September 1st, 2021

Dear readers,

Happy first hump day of September! Labor Day is this weekend, marking the unofficial end of the summer of 2021.

Overall it was a pretty great summer for Oliver Charles, particularly because of our limited edition sweater the Jewel of The Sierras, named after Lake Tahoe. Our home away from home.

Unfortunately, the past few days have been tough for Tahoe as the Caldor Fire pushed closer and closer to Tahoe's basin. It brings us an immense amount of sadness to watch a place that's given us so much inspiration teeter on the edge of destruction.

More about this in my update.

The Irony of NFT Tulips

Talking Points:

  • If you spend all day on Twitter, you may have noticed some people's profile pictures changing. Those are NFTs, and their owners likely paid 10s of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, for them.
  • Back in March, I explained NFTs (here's a refresher). Back then, pretty much everyone thought it was a bubble. Jump ahead to this month, and NFT prices are up 275%.
  • People are making money left and right, like this 12-year-old making 400k a month selling NFTs. Or whoever created NFT tulips, a homage to the famous Tulipmania. Even Damien Hirst is getting in on the fun.

Talking Points:

  • After months of COVID delays, the saga of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos will finally come to an end. Jury selection started this week, and opening remarks will begin on September 8th.
  • Court documents revealed a surprising defense strategy for the disgraced CEO. She plans to claim that her business partner and boyfriend, Ramesh Balwani, then 56, psychologically, emotionally, and sexually abused her.
  • While running Theranos, Holmes raised $700M from investors. She is being charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and ten counts of wire fraud. If convicted, Holmes faces up to 20 years in prison.

$750 Million And a Job Well Done

Talking Points:

  • Tim Cook received $750 Million on his 10th anniversary as Apple's CEO. Cook first joined Apple in 1988, serving as SVP of worldwide sales and operations before becoming chief executive in August 2011, two months before Jobs' death.
  • Knowing he could never fill Job's product shoes, he charted his own path. Turning the company into an operations powerhouse and growing Apple's stock by more than 1,000%
  • However successful, Cook turns 61 this year, and people are looking towards his successor. The belief inside Apple is that Cook will stay for one more new product category, likely AR glasses.

Demand Surges For Ivermectin

Talking Points:

  • Rumors online have lead people to think a drug known as Ivermectin is effective against COVID. As a result, prescriptions have jumped by more than 88,000 per week. The sudden demand has led to shortages, and people are turning to a version of the drug meant for animals.
  • The animal version is 10 to 15 times more potent, leading to overdoses and a 5x jump in Poison Control calls.
  • So far, there is 0 evidence that Ivermectin has any effect on COVID. On Friday, the FDA tweeted, "You are not a Horse" along with a warning about the drug.

Devastating Fires In Lake Tahoe

Oliver Charles update

In March, we decided that we should pay tribute to a very special place, Lake Tahoe, a home away from home as we built Oliver Charles.

Over the last few days, we've been reading about and seeing pictures of Lake Tahoe and the Caldor Fire.

What's usually an emerald blue lake swimming with boats and people is muted under the shadow of smoke.

The breathtaking surrounding Sierras have turned into vague distant outlines, many of which are up in flames.

South Lake Tahoe is under evacuation orders, displacing thousands from their homes.

We love Lake Tahoe. After all the beautiful memories the lake has given us, we're organizing a donation to give something back.

As a team, we've donated $500 to the El Dorado Community Foundation's Caldor Fire Fund, which helps people who've been affected.

We want to grow the amount we're giving. Next week only, we'll donate $20 of every sweater sale to Lake Tahoe's fire relief.

If you'd like to donate without ordering a sweater, here is a list of resources.

Until next time, keep building 💪.

Best, Tobias
