It's August 11th, 2021

Dear readers,

Normally, I would say happy Wednesday, but I'm not having a happy Wednesday. To be honest, the recent climate report has me feeling a bit down.

I wasn't surprised by the report. What's bothering me is this constant emphasis on things unrelated to mitigating and preventing climate change.

According to KPMG, in 2020 ~5% of VC funding went towards climate tech. This is a bit of a loaded stat, it's easy to paint both a positive and a negative picture of funding related to climate investment. My point is that I think we, as a society, need to reimagine the way we value and do things.

Ok, rant over, now back to memes.

The UN Climate Report

Talking Points:

  • If you haven't heard, on Monday, the UN released its 6th climate report. To elegantly sum up what it said, we are fucked. There's still time to avoid a total collapse, but things are going to get a lot worse first.

5 Major Takeaways From The Report:

  • There's no question that climate change is being caused by the burning of fossil fuels.
  • Climate science has gotten a lot better and we can now confidently attribute weather events to climate change.
  • No matter what we do, the next 30 years are going to be riddled with extreme weather events.
  • Climate change is accelerating more rapidly than we originally thought.
  • There's still time to avoid the most drastic consequences. However, it's dwindling.

Down Goes Trevor Milton

Talking Points:

  • On Thursday, a grand jury indicted Trevor Milton, founder of electric carmaker Nikola, on three counts of fraud. This has Theranos 2.0 written all over it. A charismatic founder raises billions based on a technology that didn't exist.
  • According to the indictment, Trevor Milton lied about "nearly all aspects of the business." At one point last summer, Nikola's valuation surpassed Ford Motor, topping $31 billion.
  • Prosecutors say Trevor built an intricate scheme designed to pump up the company's stock for his gain. Including rolling one of their vehicles down a hill to give the illusion of it working.

Kayne is Genius (At Marketing)

Talking Points:

  • No matter what you think about Kanye West, the man is undoubtedly a marketing genius. He's been teasing his 10th album, Donda, since March of 2020 and building hype like only Kanye can. At this point, the album could flop, and we'd still be talking about it for years.
  • Kanye has pulled multiple high-profile stunts, including a 10-year partnership with Gap, living in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and levitating. All while slowly releasing bits and pieces of the album.
  • It's estimated that Yeezy Gap will generate $1 billion in annual sales. For context, Gap's brand did $4.6 billion in revenue last year.

The Hidden Infrastructure Gem

Talking Points:

  • On Tuesday, the infrastructure bill officially passed in the senate. There's a lot of stuff in the bill, but one provision stands out. A provision that could mandate "drunk and impaired driving prevention technology" on all new vehicles as soon as 2026.
  • It's estimated that this would save more than 9,000 lives a year. Currently, drinking and driving costs more than $44 billion in damages annually.
  • What the exact technology would look like is unclear. The bill describes a system that can passively and accurately detect whether the blood alcohol concentration of a driver is above the legal limit.

Reimagining

Oliver Charles update

The climate report and the lack of action drove me to think about my own lack of action in some roundabout way. I asked myself how can we reinvent The New Yak Times. Heck, how can we reinvent newsletters?

After some thought, we came up with a reimagined version of the Yak. Here's the pitch:

A Reimagined New Yak Times:

Close your eyes, and imagine it's Wednesday morning. You're sleepy; only one cup of coffee deep. That one co-worker just sent you a premature message about your weekend plans. You need an escape. You're desperate for an escape.

Suddenly your phone buzzes. You grab it with anticipation, praying it's not your mom asking about your most recent doctor's visit. You breathe a sigh of relief when you see it's a number you haven't saved. Who could it be? Your curiosity explodes as you patiently wait for Face-ID to reveal this mystery texter.

Slowly you begin to register what you've received. A smile builds, and the stress of the mid-week morning starts to melt away. Then deep down, you feel a chuckle, not a laugh, but a chuckle begin to bubble its way up.

The whole thing takes but a minute, and once it's over, you're energized. You didn't know it at the time, but you were craving this momentary escape from the day.

What did you receive? The New Yak Times via text of course. Just one newsworthy meme and one thought-provoking talking point...

Until next time, keep building 💪.
