It's July 28th, 2021.

Dear readers,

Happy Wednesday, and welcome to the 25th issue of The New Yak Times. That means that over the last 6 months, I've shared 125 memes and written about 25,000 words.

The team spent some time reflecting on this over the weekend, and we came to a few conclusions. More in my update below.

Let's get into it!

  • Simone Biles withdraws
  • Big Tobacco wants to kill cigarettes
  • It's time for vaccine mandates
  • Flying is worse than normal

Talking Points:

  • On Tuesday, Simone Biles announced she was withdrawing from the women's team gymnastics final. Biles cited mental health concerns and a desire to protect her body and mind.
  • Following Biles' withdrawal, the Russian Olympic Committee went on to win gold, while Team USA took silver and Great Britain bronze.
  • Simone Biles is one of the greatest athletes of our time. She hasn't lost since 2013 and is the most decorated gymnast in history with 30 World and Olympic medals.
  • In 2016 she became the first female U.S. gymnast to win four gold medals in a single games.
  • I recently read an article about Simone Biles that compared her to Lebron James, Tiger Woods, and Tom Brady. The only difference is that they lose from time to time, and she doesn't.

Big Tobacco Wants to Kill Cigarettes

Talking Points:

  • Tobacco giant Philip Morris (makers of Marlboro) says it will stop selling cigarettes in the United Kingdom within the next decade.
  • The company has also indicated it would support a government ban on all cigarettes. Something they see as inevitable.
  • It's a curious position for a company that sells 10% of all cigarettes worldwide.
  • In May, the CEO said, "Our ambition is that more than half of our net revenues will come from smoke-free products in 2025. Like vapes (Juul), health care, and other nicotine delivery systems.
  • Philip Morris recently announced it would acquire Vectura Group, a pharmaceuticals company that produces inhalers, and Fertin Pharma, a nicotine gum maker. Get the people addicted, then sell the cure. Good business.

How To Get People To Take The Vaccine

Talking Points:

  • The Delta variant is sweeping the globe and causing major problems for the unvaccinated. Leading governments to come up with more creative ways of getting folks vaccinated.
  • Last week colleges across the country announced that all students and staff must be vaccinated to return in the fall. In addition, Government Employees in California and New York are now required to be vaccinated by September.
  • Hey, if you're reading this, then thank you. It's hard to know how much of the NYT people actually read. So let us know you saw this by replying to the email, and we promise to reward you.
  • A few weeks ago, France announced that proof of COVID-19 vaccination is now required to enter cafés, restaurants, and other public spaces in France. Vaccine appointments jumped by more than 2.2M following the announcement.
  • In the US, vaccine rates have plateaued at about 500k a day. It's estimated that to stop the spread of the virus, 70%-85% of the country needs to be immune. We are currently at about 50%.

Flying Is Worse Than Normal

Talking Points:

  • I was traveling last week and had a ton of issues. My first flight was canceled less than 24 hours before my trip. After 3 hours on the phone, I was able to get another flight to Boston (2 hours from my original destination). On my way back, my flight was canceled again due to a fuel shortage, then the flight I was rebooked on was delayed by 5 hours. WHAT IS GOING ON!!!!
  • I looked it up, and several things are happening. Much of it is related to increased demand while the industry is experiencing a massive labor shortage.
  • Flight cancellations and delays have doubled across the entire industry since 2019. In July, one-third of all flights were delayed.
  • Another reason airlines are struggling is that maintenance required on aircrafts that had been parked during the pandemic meant some carriers didn’t have enough planes to meet demand early in the surge.
  • On top of all this, unprecedented heat, wildfires and storms have pummeled huge swaths of the country. Derek Dombrowski, a spokesperson for JetBlue, said the weather had been the primary cause of operational issues.

Work Smarter

Oliver Charles update

As I mentioned initially, this is now our 25th issue of the Yak, and upon reflecting, we need to be smarter. Since we're all friends now, I will be honest and share some numbers. I heard building in public is the cool thing to do...

Over the 25 issues, we've achieved an average open rate of 40%. That's the good part.

The bad part is that the subscriber base has essentially stayed the same if not shrunk slightly.

That prompted us to ask how we can make it better? What do we need to do to grow The New Yak Times? We came up with some ideas of which we'll be implementing over the next few weeks. However, the best thing we can do is to ask you.

Let us know what you think.

Until next time, keep building 💪.

Best, Tobias
