It's June 9th, 2021

Dear Readers,

Happy hump day. This weekend Slater and I attended a craft fair and a very nice lady stopped by to tell us that she had bought one of our sweaters in November. She was absolutely in love with it to say the least.

This got me thinking about how we can take better advantage of our most engaged and excited customers. So I came up with something I like to call Trickle Down Marketing™. More on this in my update.

Let's get into it!

California's hot dry summer

California's lakes are drying up! The state is expected to experience its worst drought in decades. Just 2 years ago in 2019, the state was celebrating the end of its last major drought, which lasted nearly 7 years.

Talking Points:

The state’s 1,500 reservoirs are at only 50% of their average levels.

Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a drought emergency in 41 of the state’s 58 counties.

A 2020 study concluded that the region may be entering the worst prolonged period of drought in more than 1,200 years.

Short water supply is putting pressure on the state’s agricultural industry, which grows over a third of the country’s vegetables and supplies two-thirds of the fruits and nuts in the US.

The state is planning on trucking 17 million baby salmon to San Francisco Bay because the rivers are too low for them to make the journey.

Free popcorn for shareholders

In January, following the frenzied rally of GameStop, Reddit investors turned their attention to another heavily shorted and nearly defunct business, AMC. As individual investors began pouring money into the pandemic battered movie chain, its stock shot up more than 400% in just 72 hours, saving them from bankruptcy.

Last week the company announced they would offer free popcorn and exclusive screenings to shareholders. Naturally, the stock price rallied again on the news.

Talking Points:

AMC's stock has soared nearly 900% since the beginning of the year.

The stock was trading around $2 or $3 for the majority of 2020. Last week it reached a high of $62.55.

Throughout 2020, AMC took out nearly $6B in debt to weather the pandemic that shut down all 1000 of their theaters.

Last week as the second rally took hold, AMC sold $11M shares raising more than half a billion dollars and avoiding bankruptcy.

Floyd V. Logan

I don't really know who Logan Paul is, but I certainly know who Floyd "Money" Mayweather is. You may be surprised to find out that Logan Paul is actually a YouTube star. So why is he fighting the best boxer in the world? Money. That's why.

Talking Points:

On Sunday the two took to the ring, and to the astonishment of many people, Paul lasted all 8 rounds ending the fight in a draw.

Currently, there is a conspiracy floating around that Mayweather knocked out Paul but held him up to prolong the fight and increase earnings.

Mayweather said, "my nickname is money for a reason" and is estimated to have earned between $50M and $100M for the fight. He was at least guaranteed $10M plus 50% of the pay-per-view revenue generated.

Meanwhile, Paul will make $250K while earning 10% in pay-per-view revenue generated.

Logan Paul is one of two brothers who have found fame as social media stars and influencers. They rose to fame after becoming popular on the video app Vine.

United is buying supersonic jets

United Airlines announced that it was purchasing 15 supersonic jets from a startup called Boom. This will be the very first order for the company and the first big step towards renewed supersonic travel.

Starting in 2029, passengers will be able to go from New York to London in just 3 hours. A flight that typically takes around 7 hours.

Talking Points:

Supersonic travel has been around for a long time, first serving customers in the early 2000s. Unfortunately, following a crash in 2003 and poor economics, companies retired their fleets.

At $200 million a plane, the deal is valued at $3 billion. United also took purchase options for 35 more supersonic planes. Each plane holds up 88 passengers.

Due to the whip cracking noise the plane makes when it breaks the sound barrier, supersonic flight is outlawed over the continental US.

United sees supersonic travel as a big opportunity for its coastal business hubs like New York (3hrs to London) and San Francisco (6hrs to Tokyo).

Trickle Down Marketing™

At the craft fair this weekend, we had the opportunity to talk with customers and it got me thinking about how we might be able to take advantage of our most avid fans.

So I had an idea. We could give our most enthusiastic customers an opportunity to buy some sweaters that they could then resell to their friends. Afterwards, if their friends loved the product, they could sell them additional sweaters in bulk to resell.

Think of the structure like a triangle, where sweater sales flow down to more and more people. We used this model all the time while I was at Enron.

Anyways, That's my update for the week. I hope you've enjoyed this week's installment of The New Yak Times.

Until next time, keep building 🎁.

Best, Tobias
