Earth Day

A little-known fact about Earth Day is that it started as a marketing stunt by the founders of Instagram to encourage people to post more photos on the app...

I'm kidding, but it almost sounds like it could be true. In reality, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement.

Talking points:

Earth Day was started in the 70s by Senator Gaylord Nelson, a junior senator from Wisconsin.

Inspired by the student anti-war movement, Senator Nelson wanted to infuse the energy of student anti-war protests with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution.

More than 190 countries recognize Earth Day every year.

On Earth Day this year, President Biden committed the United States to cut emissions by half by 2030.

Raising capital gains tax

Biden plans to nearly double taxes on capital gains, pushing the top rate to 43.4% for those earning $1 million or more. Historically, the most investors have had to pay in capital gains tax is 23.8%.

Talking points:

The rate increase is expected to pull in an estimated $113 billion in revenue over the course of a decade.

According to the most recent IRS data, roughly 0.3% of US taxpayers (about 540,000 people) reported income over $1 million in 2018, meaning they’d be subject to the expected tax increase.

The tax increase is part of Biden's American Family Plan and would be used for child care and education.

Masks no longer required***

*** As long as you're outside and fully vaccinated. The CDC announced yesterday that they were updating their guidance. Masks should still be worn indoors, regardless of whether a person is vaccinated, the agency says.

Talking points:

As of April 19th, 23 states had mask mandates that required people to wear masks in public places. 16 states had no mandates. The remaining 11 states have a mix of mandates.

One of President Biden's first orders was to require masks in all federal buildings and while traveling. That mandate still stands.

Ultimately, requiring masks is up to individual businesses, less a statewide mandate.

Why buy Bitcoin when you can buy 2x4s

Since June of 2020, the price of lumber has more than tripled. The rise in prices is caused by a mix of labor shortages, increasing demand for wood, and fears of another recession.

Talking points:

Lumber prices hit a record high of over $1,400 per thousand board feet on Monday. Pre-rally prices were ~ $400.

The rise of lumber prices has led to a $24,000 apiece jump in new-home prices since April 2020.

Pandemic-related lockdowns caused sawmills to close while bored quarantining people rushed to Home Depot for DIY renovations.

The lumber industry was hit particularly hard during the 2008 recession, and fears of a repeat have caused operators to be slow to invest in more inventory, causing an imbalance between supply and demand.

Ahhhh Summer...

I like this meme because it reminds me of summertime. Running around the neighborhood with your friends. No parental supervision. No worries. Just pure unadulterated fun.

I like to imagine that I'm the dog, and the kid I bit is just one of my friends who fell on their bike after I dared them to jump the steps outside the library....

I digress. This summer is shaping up to be one for the books. Some are calling it the roaring 20s two-point O.

Regardless of how it plays out, we know you'll be looking to make a statement. That's why we're launching a new color. Think of it as the official color of summer 2021.

Here's a sneak peek. What do you think we should call it? That's my update for the week. I hope you've enjoyed this week's installment of The New Yak Times.

Until next time, keep building 💪.
