Water on Mars? Maybe with a little Ingenuity...

The aptly named Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover landed on the red planet back in February. Perseverance is the 5th rover to land on Mars in search of water and by far the most advance. One of the more unique aspects of Perseverance is that it brought along a friend.

A small helicopter named Ingenuity. On Monday, Ingenuity completed its first flight and officially became the first UFO on Mars.

Talking points:

There have been 5 rovers to land on Mars since the first one landed in July of 1997.

Each rover's mission has gotten progressively more complex, starting with proof of concept to determining if the planet could one day be a viable habitat for humans.

The Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover cost $2.9 billion. That's roughly equivalent to the amount of money Google makes in 6 days.

The previous rover, Curiosity, discovered evidence of water on Mars in 2012.

The Super League

No, it's not a gang of superheroes here to rid the world of evil. It's actually a gang of very wealthy futbol (soccer) club owners trying to make up for losses caused by the pandemic.

Long story short for those of you that don't follow European soccer:

  • There are ~15 teams that dominate the leagues in Europe and draw the biggest crowds (aka make the most money).
  • Those 15 teams are spread across different leagues all over the continent.
  • The fact that they are spread across different leagues helps support smaller underfinanced clubs.
  • The Super League would consolidate the best teams, thus devaluing the broadcasting rights and sponsorship deals for smaller teams.

Talking points:

The idea behind The Super League: it'll be more fun for fans to watch the best player play each other and thus will draw much bigger crowds.

The owners of Real Madrid, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Juventus are the driving forces behind the League.

Any team that agrees to join will automatically get $425M just for joining.

It's strongly opposed by pretty much everyone, from fans to players. Boris Johnson of Britain and Emmanuel Macron of France pledged to block the plan.

6 of the original founding teams have already backed out after an intense reaction from fans and players.

Yesterday was 4/20!

What started as a fringe holiday for stoners has undoubtedly become mainstream in the US as the legalization of pot sweeps the country. How long until it's an actual federally recognized holiday?

Talking points:

According to the internet, the origins of 420 and Marijuana can be traced back to 1970 when 5 high schoolers in Northern California would meet up at 4:20 every day to smoke pot. I'm not kidding... Can you imagine being the kids who came up with 420?

This year Chuck Schumer called for 4/20 to be an unofficial American holiday.

More than 50,000 people attend Denver’s Mile High 420 Festival each year.

DogeCoin goes to the Moon, almost

The cryptocurrency known as DogeCoin reached an all-time high this week. Gaining more than 6,000% year to date. The coin that was created as a joke back in 2013 now has a market capitalization of ~$40B. For context, Southwest Airlines is worth about $35B.

Talking points:

In January 2021, DogeCoin went up over 800% in 24 hours, attaining a price of $0.07 as a result of attention from Reddit users, partially encouraged by Elon Musk and the frenzy following the GameStop short squeeze.

Its price hit an all-time high of $0.45 on April 16.

Mark Cuban announced that the Dallas Mavericks would be accepting DogeCoin as payment.

The continued rise of Doge has been fueled by TikTok banning together to get the price of the coin to $1. Basically, a get-rich-quick scheme.

Elon Musk has plans to put a physical DogeCoin on the Moon.

Good news for everyone coming out of quarantine...

Quick update from your friendly neighborhood CMO, me, Tobias.

If you're anything like me, you've understandably gained some weight over the last year.

In fact, according to the APA’s survey of U.S. adults, conducted in late February 2021 by The Harris Poll, a majority of adults (61%) experienced undesired weight changes over the last year.

I see this as an opportunity. We've been told that our sweaters are very slimming, and I'll be damned if I don't agree.

So over the next few weeks, I'll be testing various one-liners aimed at taking advantage of what I like to call The Great Fattening.

That's my update for the week. I hope you've enjoyed this week's installment of The New Yak Times.

Until next time, keep building 🚀.
