It's the last day of March!

I desire all is well with thee. Particularly those of you navigating the Suez Canal. It'll be 72 and sunny with WNW winds blowing at 10 to 20 mph. Should be easy sailing, but no pressure...

The memes of the week include:

  • A big boat got stuck
  • NY legalized pot
  • Will we have vaccine passports?
  • WeWork is going public... again
  • Help us level up

THE BOAT IS FREE!

I'm assuming you know the story of the boat stuck in the Suez Canal. If you don't, the world's largest container ship wedged itself in the Suez Canal for 6 days and nights.

Talking points:

The boat, The Ever Given, is longer than the Empire State Building is tall. It's 400m long!

The ship can hold 20,000 containers. When it got stuck, The Ever Given had 18,300 containers loaded on board.

Each day the ship was stuck, it cost an estimated $9.3B in global trade—approximately $6.7M every minute.

369 ships were waiting to pass through the canal as of Sunday. Typically about 50 ships pass through the canal a day.

The effects of the disruption will continue to ripple through the global trade ecosystem for months.

Good news is the ship was finally freed largely due to the full moon and a high tide.

New York State legalized it

Officials in NY announced that they had officially come to an agreement to legalize weed. Peculiar timing for a governor who's currently under immense political pressure. Get them stoned! They won't remember what happened.

Talking points:

California has made almost $2B since it legalized weed in 2018.

Most of the revenue generated from weed sales goes to social programs and schools.

Legal weed has created more than 250,000 new jobs.

The cannabis market is projected to be worth $100B by 2030.

Seth Rogen's new weed company is killing it.

Vaccine passports are seemingly on the way

The Biden Administration is reportedly working with tech companies to develop a vaccine passport via an app. The app would allow businesses, countries, airlines, etc. to verify whether or not you've been vaccinated or have recovered from COVID. Israel, the most vaccinated country, already has an app called "green pass."

WeWork is back!

The once king of startup unicorns is back and taking a second run at going public. WeWork announced earlier this week that it'd be going public via a SPAC, backed by none other than Shaquille O’Neal. If someone told you 3 years ago that Shaq would help take WeWork public, would you believe them?

Talking points:

They are going public at a ~ $9B valuation down from the original $47B valuation.

The company made $3.2B in 2020 and lost $3.8B.

They are no longer a tech company, just a boring commercial real estate play.
